Thoughts on my Mother-In-Law

Greg with his Mom
I can see the love in his eyes and expressions.
I only wish I had a picture of them when he was rubbing her feet and the sweet expression on her face!

Dorothy Jean Evans Rose...a truly elect lady.  I am her daughter-in-law but I can truly say she has always treated me like a daughter and has taught me the importance of making my own wonderful daughter-in-law feel that same love. I hope you do,  Sara, because you truly are "one of ours!"  Though Mom Rose is now in a care center due to dementia, she will always be a sterling example to me of everything that is good. Greg and I lived about 1 mile from his parents in the little ranching community of Park Valley, UT from the time we were married until our oldest son was 16.  I could hardly believe how quickly Mom Rose and I bonded and how many things she taught me how to do! She is such a multi-talented woman excelling in everything she ever attempts! She is a great cook, a seamstress, a gardener and preserver, a quilter, a crocheter, a wall-paperer and most importantly, a tireless sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother! All that really matters to her are her family and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Even now, you never have to wonder how Mom feels about the Savior and the Gospel for she shares it openly.  And even with this mind-altering disease, she gives us a continued legacy of faith in the things that remain important to her. In her confusion, she still worries about her children being cared for, about her Dad and three of her brothers who were not active in the church, about my father-in-law, Gary, being cared for, and if she has taught us all we need to know so that we will never stray from what we know in our hearts to be true. All of her children have been married in the temple and are active in the church, 16 of her 20 grandchildren are happily married and in the temple (the other four are not old enough), and 30 great-grandchildren are also being raised in the gospel and are having their testimonies fostered by loving parents. Truly, what a remarkable thing this is and attests to her goodness and diligence in continually teaching us to meet our potential as children of Heavenly Father. She has always been the hardest worker I have ever known. Her hands were never idle! She worked from early morning until late evening to insure her home and yard were immaculate! I can remember feeling the pressure to be sure OUR home, yard, and outyards were as clean and tidy as hers. And I am sure they never were! But she didn't judge and instead, would come down on occasion and help me when she could see I was very busy with my four little ones. I have been so blessed to have two very wonderful mothers in my life and how grateful I am that my own mother is doing so well after having been very sick herself the first two months of the summer. I need to go back and blog about that period of time and I will do that.

Right now, it is very important for me to jot down some things that Mom talked to Greg and me about a few weeks ago. I believe it was Saturday, Sept. 24, (2011) after a mentally tormented Friday that Mom began telling Dad that she was going to die that day. Though her physical condition didn't seem bad enough, we knew that the door of reality was closing on her. She has had so many physical ailments in her life-time and has been oxygen-deprived on so many occasions that I don't know why we were not prepared for the dementia. As I think about it, I believe it is because she always bounced back from even the most severe illnesses, including the need for a permanent trach, breast cancer and double mastectomy , heart attacks and a pace-maker...to name only a few. We always joked that she had long since used up her 9 lives! Anyway, Brent called me and said that he didn't want to alarm us but Mom was very aware and speaking clearly this particular Saturday, that there was a little different spirit about her and that we might want to consider driving out to Park Valley. Greg was moving cattle that day and I headed up the canyon to find him. We dressed and packed quickly and upon arriving at the ranch, found Mom to be very lucid and wanting to talk to all of us. She spoke to us about staying active in the Church and voiced her concern that she had taught us all she needed to to insure this would happen. She asked us to take care of Dad and expressed her love for him and her appreciation for his unselfish care of her for so long. Greg and Brent gave both of them blessings. I felt the spirit present and was so very grateful we had followed the prompting and Brent's suggestion. Not knowing exactly what would happen and knowing that if all was well in the morning we would be taking her to Christie's to give Brent and Janet and Dad a break, Greg and I decided to stay for the weekend at Christie's to help with the move. Greg and I talked on the drive and he expressed the feeling that he didn't think she was going to physically die but that mentally, her mind was closing. We felt that we had been given a tender mercy that evening of having Mom cognizant and able to share her feelings with us...something we had not experienced for months. The next day, Brent, Janet and Dad brought her to Tremonton to Greg's sister, Christie's home. Greg visited with her in the morning for quite awhile and she told him all about "heaven". She seemed so happy and so relieved that she had been able to visit with her Dad who was not active. She said he was separated from her mother but told her he was trying very hard to be good and was happy. She was also joyful about being able to visit with her Grandma and Grandpa Butler. Greg told me about his conversation with her and commented that perhaps she had had the opportunity to pass through the veil briefly during the night. I was intrigued and sat down to visit with her myself. I just asked her what heaven was like. She was so happy to be able to tell me about it and painted the sweetest picture for me as she spoke. She told me that everyone was so happy there and willing to serve and help everyone else. She said that instead of this: (and she frowned at me), it was this: (and she smiled ear to ear!) It was so precious I will never forget it! She described it as a place much like this earth only much more beautiful! I felt the spirit as we visited and I have to wonder if she wasn't allowed that glimpse to put her mind at ease about her Dad. So perhaps what she told Dad that Saturday was true...she was going to die, if only but a short time. I believe Heavenly Father sent her back to earth until we all learned some very important lessons about loving and caring for one another and staying close as a family. I certainly cannot say for certain that all this actually occurred, but  I choose to believe it did. Her countenance was so beautiful and serene! I will always treasure that time with her. By that evening, Mom was back in her confused state of mind and she had no recollection of what we had discussed.

My son, Matthew, asked me to preserve all this for posterity so that is what I am doing. I am grateful for the challenge he gave me to do this so that some day we can all look back over this difficult period of time and thank Heavenly Father for his tender mercies in our lives every day, and for the powerful testimony of the gospel and faith in Jesus Christ that Mom Rose always possessed and shared so freely. I love this wonderful woman and will forever be grateful for the opportunity of helping in some small way to care for her during this very challenging time in her life. She has always been and continues to be one of my greatest blessings. I love you, Mom Rose!

Hi, Cowboy!

The cutest thing happened today...perhaps you had to be there.. but Greg and I were leaving JC Penney's when an adorable little 3 or 4 yr-old girl (with Mom in tow) walked past us and said, "Hhhiiiiiyyyy, Cowboy" (in a low, long drawn-out  manner.) Greg said "hello" to her and then proceeded to tell me that while I was trying on clothes, she had come over by him and repeatedly addressed him as, "Hi, Cowboy" in the same manner. In speaking with her for a few minutes she told him her name was Bryn...all this, of course,  while her mother was standing there listening  (rather embarrassed, by the way, but not saying a thing).

Well, about 30 seconds later as we were walking out the door, we hear that darling little low voice again saying from waaaayy down the aisle....you guessed it...Bye, Cowboy!" as he walked off into the sunset (giggle). What can I say, there is something about a man in a light-colored cowboy hat! Bryn, you certainly have great taste and know a good guy when you see one!

It was so darn cute, I can't quit chuckling about it!

"He's an old Cowhand"

Snip is a gem...notice how the rope is across his rear and he's still calm.

What a great picture! You can see what a powerful and beautiful horse he is.

I like this picture...Greg's armitas and boots and Snip's head.

One of Greg's customers took these pics yesterday while branding and printed them off for him. They are taken at Pratt Ranch in Blackfoot. Thanks so much, Anita! I love them (and the guy in them!)

SkippyJon Jones Visits the Stoddard Reading Roundup

Earlier this month, Annie Tanner, a dear friend and head of the Vista reading program at Stoddard Elementary invited Greg to come to their Reading Roundup Party and read Skippyjon Jones to the 100+ kids who had completed their reading challenge for the year. She is the daughter of some of our very good friends and a marvelous organizer and motivator to the students. She and her hubby and children have been in our home several times and they know how much "Grandpa Rose" LOVES to read these books to his grandkids...hence, the invitation. Lori, Brad and kids gave the darling Skippyjon puppet to Greg at Christmas...just a perfect little surprise! I think Greg was more nervous once he actually got there than he imagined. A throng of little kids is quite a different experience than a few precious little grandkids curled up on his lap, but he did a FANTASTIC job and had the kids "eating our his hands"! I thought these were pretty cute pictures that Annie brought over and wanted to remember this fun afternoon. He read to two different groups (I was the page turner only).  I absolutely LOVE to hear his Spanish accent and the excitement in his voice as he weaves the story of the little Siamese cat with the big ears who is sure he is really a Chihuahua...a Chihuahua named El Skippito Friskito, the great sword fighter! We have five of these books, each one darling...but the original is the best in my opinion! Anyway, kudos to my adorable husband for stepping out of his comfort zone and into a large crowd of eager little elementary kids! They looked so cute in their little cowboy hats! I love you, honey! You're a natural!!!

Rain, Snow, Sleet, or Hail....

I just had to post this picture. Can there be any doubt how much ranch life and the love of cattle and horses is ingrained in my sweet hubby?  A friend took it this spring and emailed it to us. A picture is worth a thousand words! Who else but a true cowboy could call this fun?

180 Calves Branded at the Highlands!

I'm so happy I captured this precious moment! Aren't they beautiful?
Dad roping on Smokey!
Craig filling up the vaccine gunGreg doing what he loves!
Aurora and Lenora watching the action
Grandpa Gary - the Cow Boss with Craig and Greg in background
My hubby!
Bill and Amber
Shalee, Aurora and Aubrey - fast friends in a matter of minutes!
Some of the men!Sweet grandpa with Lenora and Aurora
After stopping in Burley to do ranch business and helping Brent and Janet grocery shop for the hired men and for branding, we headed right to Park Valley for the branding to be done at the Highlands. They did about 180 head that day and it was cold and windy! My brother, Craig, came out again and brought his wife, Lenora, and their little granddaughter, Aurora, who is Faune's little one. She was a sweetie and so good all day! She wasn't a bit afraid of the branding process, either which amazed me! Greg and Brent brought the horses up from the winter range and he saddled up and rode Baxter for the first time since last summer. He brought the cows riding Baxter, but roped on Grandpa's horse, Smokey. When they turned the horses out that afternoon, Baxter was lame again so it is sadly inevitable now. He will never get well. Grandpa, out of the blue, asked Dad if he would trade Bert for Smokey. They need another young horse on the ranch and Dad really needs a well-broke horse ready to ride and do anything on! Grandpa doesn't ride much anymore and really wanted to make the trade. So without hesitation, Dad said "SOLD"! We are now proud owners of Smokey! I think he will work well for Dad and he is pretty well "bullet proof". The grandkids can ride Smokey! That was another plus in the deal! Thanks, Grandpa Rose!

Oh, the Blessings of Retirement!

Greg had to go to Jackson today to see a customer and get some papers signed, and I didn't have anything pressing on my schedule except continuing to deep-clean the den. Ummmmm, can you guess what I did? Yes, I just jumped in the car and we spent the day together! I used to dream of the time when I could do that and here it is! We popped in at Cindy's on the way home without calling her. She made the comment that it still surprises her to see us together during the day. Though we didn't stay long, it is always nice to visit with her a few minutes and hug our babies. Anyway, Greg and I had a great time just talking about this, that and the other all the way to Jackson and back! We absolutely love to be together and never seem to run out of things to discuss. And if we do, even quiet time listening to our Ian Tyson CDs is glorious! I just love this man so much. Blessed retirement...I will never take it for granted!

Stake Conference & Visit from Dad and Mom Rose!

This was Stake Conference weekend. Can I tell you how much I love Stake Conference? I feel like what we hear there is General Conference brought down to a very personal level. Our Saturday night session was very well attended and people began arriving very early to get good seats. I never remember that happening before. There was such an outpouring of the Spirit. And this morning's session was no different. It was evident that each talk was prepared under the direction of a loving Heavenly Father who had some particular things to say that we needed to hear! Now the key is to do something with the counsel we were given! I am not even going to try to write what we heard because it would lose something in the translation, but I am committed to becoming a better person. And a most wonderful blessing!...a visit from Mom and Dad Rose. Grandpa called earlier in the week to say they were planning on coming if the weather cooperated and Grandma felt all right but not to tell Greg in case they couldn't come. So I kept it to myself like a good little girl! I called Mom Rose yesterday to find out if they still planned to come and the answer was yes! (Wow, that is great motivation to clean and cook really good food! I am sure my husband wishes we could have company every day!) I did not tell Greg until early this morning and he was so happy! They have not been here for several years due to health issues, etc. They arrived this morning just in time to hug Greg and get a good seat in the chapel. Bless their hearts for getting up early and making the effort to be here. Greg spoke on the importance and sacredness of Sacrament Meeting and what is and is not appropriate. He delivered the messages of the brethren on the subject and minced no words. I am thankful that though he may "gore a few bulls" as he puts it, he takes his responsibility seriously enough that he will not let us just drift along, but will help us receive and retain the spirit if we will but take the counsel. His love for the people of this stake is evident as he speaks. I love him so much. Anyway, Mom and Dad and I came home and finished a few last minute dinner preparations while waiting for Greg to come home. We had such a wonderful time visiting together that I completely forgot about taking a picture! Darn! Anyway, it was another great weekend! Thanks again, Mom and Dad Rose, for the wonderful visit!

The Man of My Dreams

Please excuse me for being a little personal here, but this is my journal as well as a blog. I have had these thoughts and the desire to get them in writing for quite some time now. Today I am feeling particularly blessed and "in the mood" to write. I want to pay tribute to my wonderful husband of 37 years. He truly is the man of my dreams!
Though our life together has had lumps and bumps and hills and valleys, this great man has led our family with dignity, faith, and humor through the trials that we know are a necessary facet of this life on earth! I love him for his great faith in Jesus Christ. I love his practical application of the principles of the gospel and the undying faith he has always exhibited even in times of great physical pain! He has taken each trial as an opportunity to exercise his agency...realizing that he could feel sorry for himself or forge on and become a better person as a result of that trial! Thankfully he has always chosen the higher road. His study of Christ's gospel restored on the earth today has instilled in him an unshakable testimony of its truth and divinity. He has learned first hand that Heavenly Father's promises are sure upon obedience to His commandments. I have learned so much from him and together we have done our best to raise a righteous family. Greg LOVES being a dad...and being a grandpa?..well that is just the icing on the perfect cake! I love to watch him spend time with his grandkids! He thinks they are just about perfect, and I'll have to agree with that! He is so proud of each one of his children, their spouses, and his grandkids.

I am grateful for Greg's willingness to accept callings from Heavenly Father... including the one he currently holds as our Stake President...and to do it to the very best of his ability! I love and appreciate his devotion to teaching correct principles even when they are not "popular" or welcomed by some. That takes great courage but I see our Stake moving forward and doing better as a result of many members who realize the counsel he gives is not his own, but from the Lord. Their lives are enriched and blessed just as the Savior has promised and then they lift and enrich the lives of others. I'm sure that as much as Heavenly Father and the Savior love us, they must become very frustrated when we are proud and rebellious and do not want to change our ways. I have learned from my husband that repentance is an every day process and the more we learn, the more we realize how dependant we are on our Savior, Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice. We truly are "less than the dust of the earth" without Him.

I love the fact that no matter how busy he gets, he always makes time for me and his so sensitive to my needs. We laugh and have a great time together. He pitches in and helps with the cooking and clean-up, too! And of course, I have already touted his great "green thumb"! He tells me every day how much he loves me and then shows it by his actions. Can a woman ask for much more than that! I think not!

I love and respect the "balance" he seems to have in his life. He truly is a happy person in all that he does. He is a marvelous employee for his company...very respected and has been given more and more responsibility because of his honesty and analytical abilities. His customers love him because he tells them the truth and not always what they would like to hear. They love him because he knows what it is like to "sit on the other side of the desk." He loves to play racquetball and is excellent at it! And, of course, he will always be a rancher/cowboy at heart! Though we no longer live on the ranch in Park Valley, it will always be "home" and his love for and understanding of horses is amazing! We all love (including all the grandkids) his horse, Baxter, and are so happy that he is out of pain and able to work cattle again. Though he can't be out at the ranch and helping as often as he would like, we go quite often and in the meantime, he has many customers and friends who LOVE his help and expertise with every phase of their cattle operations. How he fits all of this into his life with such balance is a wonder to me!

Greg, I love you more than there are words to express. You have always been and continue to be the man of my dreams! Thank you for the past 37 years and a glorious forever!

Love,
Wendy
